What Is Outpatient Rehab?
Outpatient rehab is a structured level of addiction and mental health treatment where you attend therapy sessions during the day and return home in the evening. Unlike residential or inpatient programs that require 24/7 on-site living, outpatient rehab lets you maintain your work schedule, family responsibilities, and daily routines while receiving clinical care.
At Refresh Recovery in downtown San Diego, outpatient rehab is available at two levels of intensity: our partial hospitalization program (PHP), which meets 5 days per week for approximately 6 hours daily, and our intensive outpatient program (IOP), which meets 3 to 5 days per week for 3 hours per session. Both programs use evidence-based therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recognizes outpatient treatment as an effective and appropriate level of care for many people with substance use and mental health disorders — particularly those stepping down from residential care or those whose clinical needs don’t require 24-hour supervision.
Your Recovery Journey: What Outpatient Rehab Looks Like
Assessment
A licensed clinician evaluates your history, current symptoms, co-occurring conditions, and treatment needs to determine the right level of care — PHP or IOP.
Stabilization
Your first weeks focus on building coping skills, establishing routine, and addressing the most acute symptoms of withdrawal, anxiety, or depression through individual and group therapy.
Active Treatment
Deep therapeutic work using CBT, DBT, trauma processing, and relapse prevention. You learn to identify triggers, reframe thought patterns, and build a recovery support network.
Transition & Aftercare
As symptoms stabilize, you step down to less intensive sessions. Your team helps you build a discharge plan with community resources, peer support, and ongoing wellness strategies.
Who Benefits from Outpatient Rehab?
Outpatient rehab is ideal for people who need structured clinical support but also need the flexibility to continue with daily life. You may be a good fit if you:
- Have completed detox or residential treatment and are stepping down
- Have a stable living environment and support system at home
- Need to maintain employment or school enrollment during treatment
- Are managing a co-occurring mental health condition alongside substance use
- Have mild to moderate symptoms that do not require 24-hour supervision
- Are motivated to attend sessions consistently and complete homework
When Is a Higher Level of Care Needed?
Outpatient rehab is not right for everyone. You may need residential or inpatient care if you:
- Are actively in medical withdrawal and need supervised detoxification
- Have a history of severe, repeated relapse immediately after treatment
- Lack a safe, substance-free living environment
- Have severe psychiatric symptoms requiring stabilization (active psychosis, suicidal crisis)
- Need medication management that requires daily medical monitoring
If a higher level of care is needed, our clinical team will help you find the right placement and coordinate a warm handoff so treatment is never interrupted.
What Makes Refresh Recovery Different?
Dual Diagnosis Expertise
Many outpatient programs treat addiction OR mental health — not both. Refresh Recovery specializes in dual diagnosis treatment, meaning we address the substance use disorder and the underlying mental health condition (anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar) at the same time. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders produces significantly better long-term outcomes than treating each condition separately.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Every therapy modality at Refresh Recovery is backed by peer-reviewed research. Our outpatient programs include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), trauma-focused therapy, and psychoeducation groups. Sessions are led by licensed clinicians — not paraprofessionals — and treatment plans are individualized to your specific diagnosis, history, and goals.
Outpatient Rehab Programs at Refresh Recovery
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our highest intensity outpatient level. PHP provides 5 days per week of structured programming for approximately 6 hours daily. Ideal for individuals stepping down from residential care or those who need intensive support but can safely return home each evening.
Includes: Individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, case management, and family programming.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
A flexible option for individuals who need regular clinical support while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. IOP meets 3 to 5 days per week for 3-hour sessions, typically in the morning or evening.
Includes: Group therapy, individual sessions, relapse prevention planning, skills-building workshops, and peer support groups.
Why San Diego for Outpatient Rehab?
San Diego is one of the most sought-after locations for addiction and mental health treatment in the United States. The year-round temperate climate, proximity to the ocean, and a strong recovery community create an environment that supports healing. Refresh Recovery is located in downtown San Diego, easily accessible by public transit, with nearby coffee shops, parks, and the waterfront — all of which become part of your recovery routine.
California’s Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) licenses and regulates outpatient treatment facilities to ensure quality standards. Refresh Recovery is fully licensed by DHCS and complies with all state requirements for staffing, clinical protocols, and patient rights.
Insurance and Paying for Outpatient Rehab
Refresh Recovery accepts most major insurance plans. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), insurance companies are required to cover substance use and mental health treatment at the same level as medical and surgical care. Our admissions team will verify your benefits, explain your coverage, and handle pre-authorization — at no cost to you.
Insurance plans we commonly work with include Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Magellan, Beacon, and others. If you are uninsured or out-of-network, we can discuss sliding-scale options and help you explore state-funded resources through SAMHSA’s National Helpline.
