When we cling to another person’s company despite that individual’s emotional immatureness, we suffer co-dependency.
If your girlfriend drinks too much, and despite the many gestures of love and attention, she bursts in anger every time you talk to a female colleague over the phone, or any other acquaintance of the opposite sex, the co-dependency may be reaching a point of no return.
A “normal” person would break up with such a romantic partner if the extreme jealousy continues, but a codependent boyfriend/girlfriend will stay no matter what. Of course she/he will complain all the time, but will not find the way to put an end to that relationship because of the co-dependency developed over the months or years. Even if the sober partner remains sober, the links to the alcoholic or addicted partner reveals a lot of your personality.
