co-dependency

When we cling to another person’s company despite that individual’s emotional immatureness, we suffer co-dependency.

Suppose your girlfriend drinks too much, and despite the many gestures of love and attention, she bursts in anger every time you talk to a female colleague over the phone or any other acquaintance of the opposite sex. In that case, the co-dependency may be reaching a point of no return.

A “normal” person would break up with such a romantic partner if the extreme jealousy continues, but a codependent boyfriend/girlfriend will stay no matter what.  Of course, they will complain all the time but will not find a way to end that relationship because of the co-dependency developed over the months or years.   Even if the sober partner remains sober, the links to the alcoholic or addicted partner reveal a lot of your personality.
